Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
