Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
