Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded increased transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally Behind the Release
However, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet some are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain conservative figures to launch the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was comparatively muted following the release, particularly when compared with the loud demands for transparency that came before the congressional vote to enact a bill mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were given physical folders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
